What is involved?
Massage is the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well-being. The treatment will take place on the massage couch.
Massage not only helps with physicl ailments but also soothes and relaxes the mind. Some conditions that can benefit from massage include:-
- Anxiety and depression
- Back pain
- Joint pain
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Headaches and migranes
- Digestive disorders
- Sports injuries
The different types of massage
The types of massage I perform are Swedish Massage and Aromatherapy Massage.
Swedish Massage (also know as Classic Massage) uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking.
Aromatherapy Massage uses essential oils and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person's mind, mood, cognitive function or health. This is a deeply relaxing massage stimulating both the sense of touch and smell. Therapists who offer Aromatherapy Massage must have relevant training with the essential oils, as these oils are absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin, the lungs and the olfactory system - it is important that the therapist understands the properties of the oils and the effects they can have on the body.
Massage has been documented in history for over 4000 years. Ancient civilistions including China, Korea, Japan, Egypt, Greece, India, the Romans and Mesopotamia.
